The first-ever European Championship, formerly known as the European Nations’ Cup, was hosted by France in 1960. The first team who lifted the most sought trophy in football was labeled The Henri Delaunay Trophy.

The Henri Delaunay Trophy, which is granted to the winner of the European Championship, is one of the most coveted on the planet with the FIFA World Cup the only one that exceeds it. Henri Delaunay is the secretary of the French Football Federation and the first General Secretary of Union of European Football Associations. He first came up with the idea of continental competition in 1927. His vision for a European international tournament finally occurred with the final of the first tournament in 1960.

Pierre Delaunay, son of Henri, was liable for the production of the original trophy. Since the first tournament, it has been awarded to the winning team for them to keep for four years, until the next tournament. This trophy bore the words “Coupe d’Europe”, “Coupe Henri Delaunay”, and “Championnat d’Europe” on the front and a juggling boy on the back.  This was done so because UEFA wanted to improve the quality of the trophy as well as the scale. In 1960, the second version of the trophy is based on the original designed by Arthus-Bertrand in Paris. It measures 18 cm and weighs 2 kg more than the original, composed of fine silver, and retains its historical name. Unlike the original, which was the work of goldsmith Chobillon, the names of the winners that appeared on the base were engraved on the back, which weighs 8 kg and is 60 cm high.

In 2008, the Henri Delaunay Trophy was remodeled to make it larger, as the old trophy was overshadowed by UEFA’s other trophies such as the new European Champion Clubs’ Cup. Asprey, a renowned goldsmith, and jeweler who has a great deal of experience in trophy-making, took over the production and the latest production of the trophy’s modern equivalent.

The first captain to hold it was Iker Casillas in 2008 when Spain beat Germany 1-0. Previously, the players and coaches of the winning team and the runner-up team were awarded gold and silver medals, respectively until UEFA decided that losing semi-finalists would no longer receive medals from the 2016 edition onwards, while Bronze medals were awarded until the 1980 edition.

Countries across Europe were preparing for the tournament last year, originally set to start on June 12, 2020.

But the coronavirus lockdown has had unusual consequences on the footballing world and urged organizers to rethink when the tournament should be held. Last March, it was announced that it had been put on hold until the summer of 2021 but will still be known as ‘Euro 2020’. The tournament is taking place 60 years on since the first of its kind and is still set to be held at a number of cities around the continent, finishing with the final at Wembley in London. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal beat France in the final of the last competition while England crashed out in the round of 16 to minnows Iceland. Now all eyes are on this summer’s tournament with the Euros finally ready to start in just a few weeks.

The rescheduled tournament will kick off on Friday, June 11, 2021, at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, an opening match between Turkey and Italy. England starts their campaign against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday, June 13. Scotland starts a day later against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park, as does Wales, who plays Switzerland in Azerbaijan. Once the group stage is completed, the round of 16 will begin on June 27, with the quarter-finals a week later on July 2. And after the semi-finals on July 6 and 7, the winners will be crowned on Sunday, July 11 at Wembley.

The competition will be made up of 24 teams in six groups. The top two in each group will progress to the Round of 16 with the fourth-placed team eliminated. The four highest-ranking third-placed sides will also reach the knockout phase with the remaining two sides going home. The tournament will then proceed through to the knockout phase before a champion is crowned. Unlike the World Cup, there will be no third-place play-off at the Euros.

European Championship, formally known as UEFA European Championship, also called Euro, in football or soccer, is a quadrennial tournament held between the member countries of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The European Championship is second in rank to the World Cup among international football tournaments.

The first final of the European Championship, at the time known as the European Nations’ Cup, took place in 1960 after two years of preparatory matches between 17 national football clubs. In 1960 the Euro final competition consisted of four teams, but it expanded to eight teams in 1980 and 16 teams in 1996. Currently, qualification for a European Championship starts two years before the scheduled final when all members of UEFA begin playing between themselves to secure a place in the 16-team tournament. The qualification process does not include the host country or countries, which automatically qualify for the final.

In 2007, the Football Association of Ireland and the Scottish Football Association recommended the development of the tournament, which was later confirmed by the UEFA Executive Committee in September 2008. Out of the 54 member associations of UEFA, only three including England and Germany rejected the expansion. On 28 May 2010, UEFA announced that Euro 2016 would be hosted by France. UEFA Euro 2016 was the first to have 24 teams in the finals. This was the third time France has hosted the competition. Portugal, which qualified for the knock-out stage despite completing third in its group, went on to win the championship by beating massively favored host team France 1–0 in the final, all thanks to a goal from Eder in the 109th minute. Although Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s world-renowned striker, was out of the game due to injury in the 25th minute, this was the first time Portugal won a major tournament. In December 2012, however, UEFA announced that the 2020 tournament would be hosted in various cities in multiple countries across Europe, with the semi-finals and final being played in London. The venues were chosen and published by UEFA on 19 September 201. On 17 March 2020, UEFA announced that Euro 2020 would be delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, and proposed it take place from 11 June to 11 July 2021. The competition was suspended in order to decrease pressure on the public services in affected countries.

The UEFA European Championship has existed since 1960. It ranks right next to FIFA World Cup as the most significant fulfillment for national teams. The first edition of the UEFA European Championship included only four teams; Czechoslovakia, France, Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia. Later on, the Championship expanded to include eight teams in 1980. Since then, the competition has been developed to incorporate more teams on two additional occasions. Although the first European Championship was held in 1960, the idea backing it is much older. The two most prosperous nations in the tournament’s history are Germany and Spain, with three titles each. Spain is the only nation to successfully defend its title, having done so in 2012. Germany has played the most matches (49), scored the most goals (72), and recorded the most victories (26). In 1984, France became the only nation to win all of its matches at a tournament (5 out of 5). In 2016, the total live audience for the expanded 51-match tournament grew to 2 billion viewers, compared to Euro 2012, which amounted to an increase of 100 million.

The creativity and imagination that embody the beautiful game of football or soccer would make it an art form. What separates football from most other sports is the independence and raw expression awarded to the players. While baseball players and cricketers are restricted to particular moves, footballers may shoot, pass, tackle or dribble the ball in any mixture of ways, providing the most talented players the ability to reach the very summit of the game.

Michel Platini was an attacking midfielder, totaling 353 goals in only 652 games. He was an outstanding passer and free-kick taker, but he combined this with ferocious goal-scoring talent. Almost single-handedly, he escorted France to the 1984 European Championships, scoring nine goals in the process. He lifted the European Cup with Juventus, and he also won three league titles in his club career.

Cristiano Ronaldo was just a precociously talented kid in Sporting CP, and was discovered by Sir Alex Ferguson. The Portuguese superstar first cemented his legacy with Manchester United as one of the most famous players of our generation.

Ronaldo’s fierce determination paired with his grit and energy along is what set him with the supremes. He has become the single most recognizable name in world football today. While he made a name for himself as a global superstar with Manchester United, it is at Real Madrid where his status was elevated as an all-time great. Be it scoring the last penalty in a Champions League final penalty shoot-out or scoring a crucial goal in the Euro 2016 semi-final, Ronaldo has proved himself time and again as a vital player in the game.

On top of his game for close to 16 years now, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has proceeded to rack up the goals for Juventus after swapping Madrid for Turin in the summer of 2018.

As Europe hosts some of the biggest football clubs in the world, we decided to take a look at the most thriving football clubs with regards to the number of trophies won both domestically, in Europe, and in other club championships.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid is one of the biggest clubs in the world and, with 72 trophies, they are also known as the most successful European club in history. Their nine Champions League is a legendary record. Yes, it is true that five of them were won in the first five editions, and there is no doubting the brilliance of such success.

In the past two decades, Barcelona has gained power over Real Madrid and is now only two trophies away from their eternal rivals. Real Madrid is home to many all-time greatest some point in their careers.

Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the biggest and the second-winningest club in European history. A significant part of their success is due to the three Champions League trophies, and this has come after Johan Cruyff joined the team. In 2009, Barcelona became the first club ever to win the sextuple. Many all-time greats played at Barcelona at one point in their careers. Despite the 70 trophies, 20 leagues and three Champions League Barcelona is not very happy with that, and their ultimate dream with to keep on improving. This is true in both these competitions and in the overall trophy count, in which they still fall behind their eternal rivals.

Ajax

Ajax is clearly the most successful club in Holland and also one of the most significant and successful clubs in history. They might not be a top team right now, but throughout history, they had some of the best players ever to play on the football field, especially Johan Cruyff. They’re also notable for possessing one of the best football academies in the world.

FC Porto

Another case where a man changed everything is the team FC Porto. Pinto da Costa took over, Porto were only the third club in Portugal, but they now hold the first position in Portugal and one of the most successful clubs in Europe. Pinto da Costa is the most successful president in the history of football, as Porto has won 51 of their 65 trophies during his 30-year tenure. In the past 25 years, Porto has won the Champions League twice and has become a regular presence in the latter stages of the main European competition.

BetShah offers you great odds to bet online

Germany and Spain are each represented by four teams, Italy and England by three respectively, while a French and a Portuguese side are going to try to stir things up and take the trophy to their respective home countries. The round of 16 draw has uncovered two big clashes for the football fans. Paris Saint-Germain (13.00) perhaps seems the most unlucky against Barcelona (17.00)Chelsea’s (15.00) battle will not be easier either against El Cholo’s Atletico Madrid (17.00).  BetShah considers Bayern Munich to be the title favorites, with odds of 3.75. The Bavarians will face Lazio FC (151.00) and considering the difference between betting odds the Biancocelesti are about to have a real challenge ahead of them. BetShah believes Manchester City to be the second favorite, with odds of 5.00. The Cityzens undoubtedly sport a very solid and capable roster, but will Guardiola’s side find the psychological strength to move forward this time around in the tournament against Die Fohlen of Borussia-Park (151.00)?  Only time will tell. Liverpool is the third Champions League favorite (6.50) and Jurgen Klopp’s team will surely not remain indifferent after the shocking home defeat by Burnley in the Premier League which ended the magnificent 68-game unbeaten run at Anfield, another defeat in the FA Cup against United, and finally with a dramatic defeat at King Power Stadium against Leicester. Who will win the FA Cup in 2020-21?  Among other perceived favorites we have PSG, last year’s edition finalist, at odds of 13.00. The Parisians will face Barcelona and the former Netherlands defender Ronald Koeman tries hard to bring back the Catalans on the road to success. Will Barcelona make a positive difference this year in the Champions League? The tournament is in Barcelona’s DNA and PSG will have a hard time forgetting the last seven minutes of the epic 6-1 defeat from several years ago. Do you remember the highlights of one of the greatest European ties of all time? Real Madrid is looking to bounce back, and Zinedine Zidane’s side has the experience to move forward in the tournament. Some would consider offered odd of 17.00 to be a real steal. Last but not least, Juventus, the Bianconeri of Andrea Pirlo, and Cristiano Ronaldo are the fourth Champions League favorites (9.00) on the list.

Manchester United vs Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back at the Old Trafford and will be the key figure of this heavyweight clash of former European Champions. The Swedish star scored 17 times in only 33 games for Man Utd during his two-season stay (2016-18). Recently he reached the same number of games with the “rossoneri” jersey, having scored 24 times, although he’s not as aggressive as in the past. There’s plenty of international history between them, the two sides met total 10 times on various occasions. Each team has won 5 matches, there’s no single draw. Both teams are lying in 2nd place of their local leagues.

Ajax vs Young Boys

After seeing off French side Lille with two 2-1 wins, Ajax in facing the Swiss champions. The Dutch are currently running a series of 19 matches without defeat in all competitions, having scored 48 times in total and conceded only 19. It’s the first time Young Boys reach such a far stage in the competition, after a surprising performance vs favorites Bayer Leverkusen from Germany, where they’ve managed to win both legs (4-3 at home, 2-0 away). However, this away win was the only second in 15 matches far from home in the competition since 2015. The two sides have met back in 1988 Cup Winners Cup quarter final stage, Ajax went through.

Dynamo Kyiv vs Villarreal

The Ukrainian side took a well-deserved 1-0 win in Belgium vs Club Bruges two weeks ago in the “16th finals” stage and checked ticket for the 8th finals. They currently have three consecutive 1-1 draws in their last three UEFA Europa League home clashes. The Spaniard will travel to chilly Kiev (-2 C on Thursday according to the weather forecast) to defend their almost excellent away record in the competition. Villarreal CF has lost only one of the last 11 away UEFA Europa League matches, from fellow Valencia at the 2018/19 quarter finals phase. This is the first meeting between the two sides.

Roma vs Shakhtar Donetsk

AS Roma would like to take a step forward this season, as their European Cups 2019-20 campaign has bowed out at this stage. On the contrary, the Ukrainian side reached the semi-finals last season. The two sides have met six times and, surprisingly, it’s Shakhtar who has four wins and the most prestigious Italian side two. Roma has faced only two defeats in “Olympico” stadium this season in all competitions, having won 13 of 19 clashes. Shakther Donetsk faced an upset elimination in local cup last week, lost to 2nd division side Ahrobiznes Volochysk. Let us remind that the second meeting will take place in neutral Kyiv rather than Donetsk due to safety reasons.

Olympiacos vs Arsenal

Shades of another Greek tragedy or a sweet revenge? The two sides met last season in the UEFA Europa League 16th finals stage and the Greeks took a thrilling 2-1 extra time win in London, as Moroccan striker Youssef El Arabi scored the winning goal in the dying seconds of the 2nd leg. Arsenal had won the first match in Piraeus by 1-0 score, thanks to an Alexander Lacazette goal. There are many familiar faces still playing in two sides. Arsenal has reached the UEFA Europa League final in 2019 and would surely like to go far in the competition, as their Premier League record is nothing but impressive this season.

Tottenham vs Dinamo Zagreb

Actually there’s a reverse of first and second leg ties, with the first match taking place in London instead of Zagreb. After thrashing Austrian side Wolfsberger AC with a total 8-1 score in two matches, the Mourinho-led Spurs would like to add one more win to their home record. So far they count five out of five, scored 20 times and conceded only twice in their first tie back in early October to Maccabi Haifa. Dinamo saw off Russian side Krasnodar winning both games. They’re currently running an eight-game winning record in all competitions. There has been a single match between them back in November 2008 UEFA Cup group stage, with Tottenham thrashing Dinamo 4-0 with a Darren Bent hat-trick. To keep it short, if you know how does football betting work you won’t pass this opportunity.

Slavia Praha vs Rangers

Both teams are in top of their local league and are seeking a prolongation of their European adventure. In fact, last weekend Rangers have secured their first Scottish Premier League title and 55th in total. Slavia is near to grab the third consecutive league title, as they’ve a comfortable 14-point lead. Slavia has faced only one defeat in their 25 last official matches in all competitions, a 4-0 thrash by Bayer Leverkusen in UEFA Europa League group stage. Rangers joined Belgian side Antwerp in a two-leg goal fiesta, both games ended with a Rangers win and 7 goals each (4-3 in Belgium, 5-2 in Glasgow).

Granda vs Molde

The Spanish side is looking forward to extend the European campaign, as they enjoy their first Europa League clashes this season. So far they’ve eliminated more prestigious Italian side Napoli two weeks ago, defending their 2-0 home win with a 2-1 away defeat in southern Italy. Molde is back on business after the shortest Norwegian winter break ever. They haven’t played an official match since mid-December, but managed to get rid of German side Hoffenheim with a 2-0 away win after a thrilling 3-3 home draw.
